Self portraits, transformation and the power of tattoo

8.22.24

Photography has always been more than just a hobby for me. It’s a way to explore express and transform my identity.

Through the lens of my camera, I can capture different versions of myself, experiment with new personas, and see the world from fresh perspectives. In many ways, this process of self-discovery and transformation through self-portraits mirrors the experience of getting a tattoo. Both are deeply personal, therapeutic, and invigorating, allowing us to redefine ourselves and our stories.

The Art of Self-Portraits

When I’m working with my camera, I’m not just taking a picture; I’m crafting a narrative. Each self-portrait is an opportunity to explore a different facet of who I am or who I want to be. It’s a way to play with identity, to shift perspectives, and to see myself in new, sometimes surprising, ways. This process is therapeutic—it’s a moment of introspection, a chance to pause and connect with my inner self. Self-portraits allow for transformation in a way that’s both immediate and tangible. I can be one person in the morning and, by the afternoon, transform into someone entirely different with just the change of lighting, expression, or pose. This act of creation is refreshing and revitalizing—it’s a way to continually renew myself, to explore the endless possibilities of who I can be.

Parallels with Tattoos: Transformation on Skin

Just as self-portraits allow me to transform in front of the camera, tattoos offer a way to transform through the art on my skin. Tattoos are more than just designs; they are deeply personal symbols of our journeys, identities, and transformations. Like photography, the process of getting a tattoo is a form of self-expression and introspection. Each tattoo marks a moment in time, a decision to carry a piece of that moment with you forever. It’s a way to reclaim your body, to tell your story, or to symbolize a change. The act of getting tattooed is both therapeutic and empowering, similar to the feeling I get when I create a self-portrait. There’s a sense of control, of making the intangible tangible, of bringing an internal transformation to the surface.

Therapeutic and Invigorating Experiences

Both photography and tattooing offer unique forms of therapy. Taking self-portraits gives me space to explore my emotions, to process my thoughts, and to express parts of myself that might otherwise remain hidden. It’s invigorating to see the final image, to recognize a version of myself that I’ve created, and to feel a sense of renewal. Especially with chronic illness, even though I feel sick I can create an image of a vibrant, healthy person.

Getting a tattoo carries a similar energy. The process is often a journey—whether it’s choosing the design, working with the artist, or experiencing the physical sensation of the needle. It’s a powerful reminder of our ability to endure, to transform, and to emerge stronger on the other side. Just as with photography, the result is something tangible, a permanent reminder of a moment of change. Whether behind the camera or in the tattoo studio, the acts of self-portraiture and tattooing are transformative experiences. They both offer a way to explore identity, express emotion, and mark significant changes in our lives. Through these creative outlets, we can transform ourselves in ways that are both visible and deeply personal, making them not only artistic practices but also profound forms of self-care and self-discovery.
